Facials! I don't mean the dirty kind!

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 17:09:11 PDT
I think I've had a facial maybe 1 other time and it was one of those deals where you go "Oh, whatever" and abandon yourself and 60 bucks to the hands of fate. Salons and day spas are such a crapshoot. You know that some strangers are going to touch you for a while and some shit's going to happen to you - but what? It is very like going to a whorehouse but for middle aged suburban ladies (as I'm sure many of you have noticed.) So what happened to me in this huge fancy (yet cheap) new salon pla

Kenny Alexander not running for LG?

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 17:09:18 PDT
According to an article in the Daily Press -- http://www.dailypress.com/news... -- Kenny Alexander, Delegate from Norfolk, is apparently leaning against running for Lieutenant Governor. Jon Bowerbank, a businessman from Southwest Virginia, is being talked about instead. So that would leave us with 3 white male Democrats to run against 3 white male Republicans? Eeeesh.

New York Report American Airlines got their act together in time for my flight here Thursday. The plane took off on time and landed darn close to the scheduled hour. Public: Don't Mess With My Flight Plans

Sun, 13 Aug 2006 11:58:25 PDT
"Pretty soon we'll have to fly naked!" The mass media rapidly embraced the UK terror storyline fed to them. The BBC, CNN, CBC Newsworld and other all-news broadcasters covered scarcely anything but the narrowly averted catastrophe throughout the day. Funny thing, but the general public wasn't buying it. The reaction was surprisingly cynical...

NYT: DOD Strategic Communications

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 19:44:43 PDT
Today's New York Times features two items concerning the Department of Defense and strategic communications / outreach. David Barstow's Behind TV Analysts, Pentagon’s Hidden Hand makes the claim that a "Pentagon information apparatus" has used a group of retired military officers in a campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration’s wartime performance. To the public, these men are members of a familiar fraternity, presented tens of thousands of times on television and radio

Thoughts on Zephyr the 'Next Generation Test Management System'

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 20:06:34 PDT
Over the last month I've been looking at Zephyr, a test management system that touts itself as "Next Generation". What exactly is Zephyr and what does it have to offer to the testing community? "Taking a completely realistic approach to how Test Teams work, collaborate and interact with each other in their department and the rest of their world, Zephyr brings together a comprehensive set of features, a really slick UI and Web 2.0 features at a price point that makes it very affordable for

Pentagon Study? Current Events in Iraq? Not so Fast...

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 20:14:37 PDT
Unfortunately this is not the first instance - nor will it be the last – of highly selective use of source quotes and excerpts as well as distortion of context by members of the “mainstream media” in reporting on recent events and trends in Iraq…

Sunday Bookchat

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 20:53:11 PDT
We all know the drill. Some ostensibly left-wing figure — think Christopher Hitchens or Martin Amis — loudly announces he’s given up his liberal ways and goes flouncing off to the right side of the aisle, where his work becomes steadily crankier and less interesting. (David Mamet has just begun this process; several weeks ago he published a column titled “Why I Am No Longer a Brain-Dead Liberal,” a title that proved only half right.) And then there is former Republican strategist Kevin Philli

Luxury Brands

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 20:57:40 PDT
Forbes lists the sought-after luxury brands in the fashion world: 1: Gucci 2: Chanel 2: Calvin Klein 4: Louis Vuitton 5: Christian Dior 6: Versace 7: Giorgio Armani 8: Ralph Lauren 9: Prada 10: Yves Saint Laurent …not a bad list, but it’s missing Hermes and possibly Burberry]. Many of these rag dealers have of course branched out into gadgets & consumer electronics, eg the recently announced ‘ Armani Samsung LCD TV ‘. And then there’s the Prada Phone, and the Gucci i-gucci LCD wa

Indian Supreme Court Gives Relief to Commercial Landlords

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 22:08:24 PDT
For decades, the Indian Government and the legal system have been lopsided in favour of tenants, with the Rent Control Act being one-sided to protect tenants. The Act has reduced property rights, not letting landlords get their property back when they need the property for their own use, and not letting them raise rents in accordance with annual inflation trends. The Rent Control Act has scared landlords so much that there are many property owners who cannot envisage letting out their currently
